We wanted to emphasize the effect that climate change has on local wildlife, we originally thought about basing the game on a polar bear however we thought this would distance our player from the issue whereas by using a fox as the main focus the target of the players attention is back home with a more local creature. Our initial ideas involved a bright and airy forest, where the fox would be living a happy life with its family. This would serve as a tutorial and help to contrast the later themes. After hitting a barrier in the forest, the player would see their beautiful home destroyed, and their mate killed, by deforestation and rampant agricultural expansion. The player’s kit would then flee the forest, leading to the city level. Our high-level concept for this game was to play on the theme of climate change as a generational issue, cycling through multiple fox generations to emphasize the permanent effects of climate change.
